Robotic hernia surgery moves forward with da Vinci 5

In a recent LinkedIn post, surgeon Dr Roshan Ariyaratnam shared his experience with the next‑generation
da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system after first sitting at the console
during the American Hernia Society meeting in Chicago in August 2024 and then
spending additional time with the platform in Australia.

He describes the da Vinci 5 not as a cosmetic refresh of the Xi system, but as a
significant evolution in robotic technology for abdominal wall and hernia surgery.

Dr Ariyaratnam highlights three features that stand out in real‑world surgical use:

  • True force‑sensing that reframes how surgeons handle tissue.
  • Ergonomic refinements that matter over high case volumes.
  • Workflow improvements that feel built for efficiency and consistency rather than marketing.

For Dr Ariyaratnam, precision, feedback and reproducibility are what ultimately define
outcomes in robotic hernia surgery, and on all three fronts the da Vinci 5 is
“serious kit”.

As robotic surgery continues to mature, platforms like da Vinci 5 are expected to
shape how surgeons train, measure performance and refine techniques in abdominal wall
and hernia reconstruction, particularly as advanced robotic systems become more widely
available across Australian hospitals.
